His father tells him “Be a man.”
But does he even know what that means?
Being a man isn’t degrading women.
It’s not beating people just for the heck of it.
It’s not drinking till you can’t even think straight.
It’s not treating others like garbage.
It’s not neglecting those you’re responsible for, or abusing those who trust you.
Being a man is knowing when to hold your fire.
It’s knowing the skills you need to protect those you love,
But not misusing those skills to needlessly destroy others.
It’s knowing the meaning of “self control”.
It’s standing up for those who can’t stand up for themselves.
It’s not backing down from the right thing, and holding your ground against the wrong.
It’s being willing to work for what you need.
It’s being responsible even when no one is watching.
It’s knowing how to be a leader, without being a dictator.
It’s respecting others, even if they don’t deserve it.
It’s knowing what love means, and not being afraid to show it.
It’s being honest, even about the most horrible things.
It’s learning that not everything goes your way.
It’s knowing when YOU need to submit,
And knowing what submission is.
It’s treating women like people, not play toys.
It’s keeping a good attitude, even when you feel like crap.
It’s giving others a second chance, even when they don’t deserve it.
It’s keeping your faith in your darkest hour.
Being a man is knowing all that the title of “man” entails and still having the guts to BE one.
